1. What does the snow and ice ordinance say?

Sec. 20-2. - Snow and ice on sidewalks. It shall be unlawful for the owner or occupant of any property or the agent of any non-resident property owner within the city limits to permit any snow, ice or other obstruction to remain upon any sidewalk in front of or along such property so as to interfere with the free, easy or safe passage of people along and over such sidewalk.

One inch (1”) or more of snow and any ice accumulation is required to be removed from public sidewalks.

The door hanger is not a ticket, it is a one-time warning that a ticket will be issued after the next snow and ice event if the sidewalk is not cleared within 24 hours after the event ends.

A blue door hanger will be used to Thank You for clearing your sidewalk and will be given in place of the pink door hanger warning.  

7. How much will the fine be for not clearing the sidewalk?

$25.00 per ticket plus $29.00 for court costs for a total of $54 for each offense after the warning.

8. Can I receive more than one ticket?

Yes, a ticket can be issued for each snow and ice event if the property is in violation.

9. Will the owner or the tenant be ticketed?

City code allows either the tenant or the owner to be ticketed.  In most cases, the City will hold the owner responsible and the owner will be ticketed.

10. I thought the City was responsible for maintaining the sidewalk?

City ordinance, Sections 20-155 through 20-166 require that property owners keep the sidewalks adjoining their property clear and in repair, and can impose the costs of reconstruction upon the property.  Chapter 20 of the City Code requires all adjoining property owners to keep sidewalks free of trash and debris, as well as snow and ice.
